A Happy New Year to you all.

New years celebrations take place under a much less strident emotional situation than heralded in Christmas. In fact we are now at a phase of the Moon that may be broadly reminiscent of the emotional doldrums with few great highs or lows.

In some respects this may be an atmosphere of lowered inspiration and enthusiasm, and it may feel harder to get going. As with previous days lucky will be those able to place few demands on their time and efforts and able to take things very much at their own pace. On the other hand those faced by tight deadlines may come to feel especially pressured and time may seem to evaporate with distressing haste.

Sometimes this phase of the Moon can result in melancholic or depressive moods and emotions with a pessimistic outlook and lowered sense of confidence. Under these circumstances there may be a bleak view of the future with doubts and misgivings together with a hesitant, non committal attitude that may lead to a loathing of having to make decisions of any kind. Usually at this phase of the Moon (around 50 - 60% illuminated) there is a brief period of quieter moods and feelings, broadly reminiscent of the emotional doldrums.

For some this may well describe this present period, and this may have numerous ways in making itself apparent. For example some may feel slightly less motivated than usual so that it becomes harder to get going.

The Moon remains in opposition to Uranus until around 24:00 GMT (19:00 EDT) This means the possibility of a highly strident mood period with the possibility of an extreme atmosphere and friction within the family setting.

As a result there may be contentious encounters with out of character moods and emotions whose consequences may be around for some time to come. Moon/Uranus oppositions can also result in bizarre, or eccentric behaviour with tendencies towards escapism or unusual modes of behaviour.

Another reason to be wary is that Jupiter continues to be in opposition to Mars. This may lead to a general heightening of moods and emotions with the possibility of aggressive, violent, or belligerent attitudes that may all too easily result in arguments and loss of temper. Indeed where arguments develop there may be little control in what is said or done and events may swiftly progress towards extremes, that in this current atmosphere may be very extreme indeed. We are still just four days beyond the Full Moon and this means there is enough nervous tension to cause problems. As a result there may be irritable thoughts and feelings with simmering resentments that may occasionally explode into spectacular outbursts of temper.

These may be of considerable venom and cause a great deal of disruption. In addition Jupiter is in opposition to Mars - the planets of war as some regard them. This will tend to heighten moods still further and although the overlying tendency is to a slow dissipation of high moods and emotions this alignment will be capable of bringing discord to even the most convivial of settings.

Probable traits will include assertive or extremist ideas and tendencies with restless discontent. On the more positive side there may be a renewed zest for on going schemes and ventures, with an adventurous and out going disposition and the ability to actively enjoy life. Many will notice a discernible climb down from the high moods and emotions of the last few days. Nevertheless we still remain in the midst of a highly complex pattern of celestial alignments and there is still need to be wary.

For example today sees the opposition between the Moon and Neptune, with the pair remaining aligned until around 06:00 GMT (01:00 EDT) on the 28th December This is likely to lead to extreme emotional sensitivity, with the chance of unstable, confused, or chaotic thoughts. On the more positive side it is also likely to lead to refined, subtle, and responsive attitudes with enhanced imaginative abilities that will verge on the psychic.

In reality many of the above mentioned traits will be balanced, enhanced or cancelled out by other alignments at this time. In particular there is the alignment between the Sun and Jupiter, both of which are now in opposition to Mars. Resulting emotions will address traditional Jovian values of harmonious good humoured behaviour with optimistic and conscientious attitudes. On the other hand the opposition to Mars will bring powerful self expression with assertiveness and the possibility of contentious encounters, arguments and volatile expression, which however will not be anywhere near as forceful as even a few days ago.
